Very rare and original, 1903 First Edition, Complete Deck of Madame Le Normand’s “Gypsy Witch” Fortune Telling Cards with their original, slip case style box. The Deck is titled on the Box “Gypsy Witch Celebrated Fortune Telling Cards By Madame Le Normand” Cards” and was manufacturer by the Standard Playing card Company of Chicago.
Each of the 53 Playing Cards measure approx. 2 1/2" by 3 1/2". The Deck includes 52 Playing / Fortune Telling Cards and a Joker. The Card fronts feature an inset picture of a playing card, text giving the meaning of the card and a second image related to the fortune text. The Joker is illustrated with a central image of a Devil peeking out from a wicker chest with a court jester figure about to close the lid of the chest. Text below the chest reads “I’ve Got Him”. The backs of all the Cards feature a woodlands scene.
The Deck also includes a fold out Instructions printed by the Home Game Co. of Chicago titled “Instructions / How to Tell Fortunes with Mlle. Le Normand’s Gypsy Witches Fortune Telling Cards”. The Instruction sheet is copyright 1903 by Frederick J. Drake & Co.
Marie Anne Adelaide Lenormand (1772–1843) was a French professional fortune-teller of considerable fame during the Napoleonic era. In France, Lenormand is considered the greatest cartomancer of all time, highly influential on the wave of French cartomancy that began in the late 18th century. Lenormand claimed to have given cartomantic advice to many famous persons, among them leaders of the French Revolution (Marat, Robespierre and St-Just), Empress Josephine and Tsar Alexander I. She was active for more than 40 years. In 1814 Lenormand started a second literary career and published many texts, causing many public controversies. She was imprisoned more than once, though never for very long.
This rare and fascinating, 1903 First edition of Madame Lenormand’s Gypsy Witch Fortune Telling Cards is in very good to excellent condition. The Deck of Cards is complete, as issued and none of the Cards are damaged or worn. The cards exhibit very light wear from use but overall are exceptionally well preserved. The Deck is complete with all 53 cards and folding instruction sheet. The original slip-case Box is present but damaged – the inner case is intact although partially split at one corner junction. The outer case is damaged – separated at two on the side panel junctions, worn and lacking the red cloth on one of the side panels.
