Captain is the traditional customary title given to the person in charge of a ship at sea. On most legal documents in the merchant shipping industry, the captain is more formally referred to as the ship's Master.
Master = A person holding an unrestricted master's license (or certificate) is called a Master Mariner, and may use the postnomial MM. The term unrestricted indicates that there is no restriction of size, power or geographic locale on the license. It is the highest level of professional qualification amongst mariners.
The Union-Castle Line was a British shipping line that operated a fleet of passenger liners and cargo ships between Europe and Africa from 1900 to 1977. It was formed from the merger of the Union Line and Castle Shipping Line.
The steam ship was the R.M.S. Armadale Castle. Royal Mail Ship, usually seen in its abbreviated form RMS, is the ship prefix used for seagoing vessels that carry mail under contract to the British Royal Mail. The designation dates back to 1840.
SS Armadale Castle was a passenger steamship built in 1903 at Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering, Govan, Scotland, for the Union-Castle Mail Steamship Co Ltd, London, the first ship ordered for the newly formed company.
