Description
This exquisite gown dates to the 1950s, and features rich fabrics, impeccable quality, interesting lines, and subtle accents. I'm sure it was quite an expensive gown at the time.Fashioned out of white silk peau de soie ( skin of silk), it is lined with a stiff Pellon interfacing which was typical of gowns from this era. The Pellon creates and maintains a structured shape.
The gown has a boat neckline in front and a deep V in back. The sleeves slope gently from the shoulder, ending in a point at the wrist and fastened with buttons. The bodice has a deep V at the back waist and is also fastened with buttons.
Notice the interesting detailing at the front waistline and the unique shape of the train in back.
The lace appliques are created from one of the most costly French laces, called Lyon lace. They are hand beaded and accented with handmade silk roses.
The gown is small, but could be enlarged by a skilled dressmaker. The simplest fix would be to add a corset back in place of the buttons. The corset will easily enlarge this area by 4 inches or so.
The wrists are also small. If they are too tight, I'd recommend cutting off the point, removing the buttons and cutting a slit at the top of the wrist. Hem the opening, but do not close it. It will give you some much--needed space, while replicating the opening at the center back of the train.
Bust: 34
Waist: 25
Shoulder to hem (front): 55
Natural waist to end of train: 68
The dress is in excellent vintage condition with one missing button on the wrist and some light soiling on the train. I don't see any perspiration stains.
A truly spectacular, class, one of a kind gown for your special day.
