Description
On offer here is anEARLY post US military segregation class photo
of the
6th Infantry Battalion in June, 1951 at Camp Pendleton base in Oceanside, CA
.
The 'yarder' framed photo measures 9 in x 30.5 in long.
The US
military
began it process of
desegregation
of the various branches of the
military
in 1949 with 'unified' training at the various military bases across the country. The process took time and the early experiences of African American recruits made difficult by both the Marine leadership and the fellow recruits made
appearances
by blacks uncommon by this date.
We do not yet know this recruits name, but will continue to research
military
records to determine what his name was and what service and possible deployment record exists.
A scarce and important historical and cultural artifact.
