KM 1, one year type, from an unusual location. Quarter dollar size bronze coin, with bananas on the obverse and a Katanga cross (a primitive form of money) on the reverse.
When the Democratic Republic of the Congo gained its freedom from Belgian control, the mineral-rich southernmost state of Katanga broke away from it. From July 1960 to January 1963 the country struggled against Congolese forces and U. N. forces, but was ultimately returned to Congolese control.
